3. Shaitel Repairs

Even more in demand than shaitel machers are people who know how to repair shaitels. You can teach yourself how to do this by watching tutorials online, or you can learn from someone who already does it. Most shaitel machers outsource their repairs, so you can get started with just a few phone calls letting people know that you offer the service.

How To Prepare Meals in Advance

I get it. It’s hard to cook every single day without a break. Add in a job or college (or both!) and it just adds to the challenge.

When I first got married, I was working full time, often getting home between 5:30-6 pm. My husband would come home at 6:30 and I wanted to have dinner ready by the time he came home. During that period while I was working at that job, I did a lot of planning ahead for meals. I would do crockpot dinners, cook and freeze on Sundays or do meals that required very minimal time.

If you have a busy schedule or are nervous about cooking for yom tov, this post is for you. In this article, I will walk you through different ways to plan ahead for meals so you have them easily accessible when you need them.

Freezing prepared (raw) meals

Preparing meals and freezing them raw is my favorite way to prepare meals in advance. Most often, I do it when I am already cooking in the kitchen.

Method #1: As you go along

For example, if I am making schnitzel, I’ll bread a few extra cutlets and freeze them uncooked. If there is a day where I am short on time, I’ll just pull the prepared schnitzel out of the freezer and fry/bake and dinner is ready in just a few minutes.

This method can apply to most types of prepared foods. Some of my favorites include cookie dough, hamburgers and schnitzel.

Method #2: Knock it out

Another way to easily knock out the prep time is to do it on one shot. Set aside a few hours one day and prepare as many meals as you can. Fill up your freezer and you will be good to go.

TIP: Freeze the meals in small portion sizes. If it’s just you and your husband eating, one full sized recipe can easily get you 2-3 meals.

TIP: Put a piece of parchment paper between each layer of food (ex. Between each piece of schnitzel or burger)

Freezing cooked food

Cooking meals and then freezing them makes dinner time literally as simple as 1,2,3. Before dinner, all you have to do is defrost and warm it up!

How to know which foods freeze well

There’s no official rule, but here is a list of which foods typically do or don’t freeze well.

Do Freeze: Soups, kugels, cooked meat/chicken with a sauce, baked goods, prepared raw meat/chicken

Don’t freeze: Foods that easily dry out (cooked turkey, spiced chicken), raw fruits/vegetables, potatoes

TIP: Once raw meat or chicken is defrosted, it should not be frozen again raw.

Defrosting raw meat/chicken

Have you ever tried to defrost meat or chicken on the counter? If you have, you will know that it can take a long time. Here are a few tricks so you don’t have to wait it out.

  1. Put the raw meat/chicken in the fridge the night before you need it
  2. Place the package of meat/chicken face down in a bowl or pan of cold/warm water*

*Don’t use hot water since it can cook the food!

Defrosting frozen prepared meals

The night before eating a meal from the freezer, put the food into the fridge. This way the food will take a fraction of the time to heat up.

If you didn’t know the night before, you can pull the meal out of the freezer a few hours before and let it sit out on the counter to defrost before heating up.

If you don’t have any time, just throw the meal into the oven. Don’t worry, I won’t judge 😉

Crockpot dinners

Crockpot dinners are often the simplest to prepare and are full of delicious flavor.

In the morning, place the ingredients into the Crockpot and all you need to do is turn it on. When you come home, the house will smell delicious, and the food will be hot and ready to eat.

TIP: The night before the planned Crockpot dinner, prepare all the ingredients in a Ziploc bag and store in the fridge. This will save you a lot of time in the morning!

Conclusion

Having prepared meals in the freezer is very convenient, and it does not need to take a long time to prepare! Stock up your freezer and enjoy the break from cooking when you need it.

Gray Fabric Sofa Placed Indoor

Now that you are married and moved out of your parents home, it’s time to start getting settled in your new apartment. Here are some things you should know to make your renting experience an enjoyable one.

Have fun with it

This is your home! Add personal touches and decorate to make your apartment feel warm and homey. Don’t be afraid to hang pictures on the wall (unless your landlord doesn’t allow it) and enjoy setting everything up how YOU want it 🙂

When you first move in

Take pictures/video of your apartment when you first move in. Save this for when you move out in case your landlord charges for damages done to the property. This way you will be able to look back and see if a noted damage was there before you moved in.

Try to maintain a positive relationship with your landlord

This may seem obvious, but it is probably the most valuable piece of advice you will get.

When you have a good relationship with your landlord, they will be nicer to you. This will be very beneficial when issues arise. If you are a good tenant, the landlord will want you to stay, and therefore try to keep you happy.

How you ask makes a big difference

Do you have a leaky faucet that is taking a long time to get fixed? Or did you get a renewal offer with a huge increase in rent? Got charged a late fee and want it to be waived?

There are a few ways to approach situations like these, and the psychology is simple. How you ask will affect how your landlord responds. If you address the issue with your landlord in a negative tone, you will get a negative response. Even if your request is addressed right away, you can be sure that they will not want to help you out the next time you have an issue.

“But shouldn’t they know how upset I am? I have a right to complain and this issue needs to be completed right now!” Yes, you are correct. As a tenant, you have a right to request that maintenance issues be addressed. However, you need to keep in mind that there is the short-term issue at hand and the longer-term relationship that you want to keep up.

If you have tried asking for help multiple times with no response, change your method of communication. Try sending an official email or give a call to someone higher up in the management company. Start with something positive, and let the landlord know how great of a tenant you are. Address the issue and include any documentation you have proving how long the issue has been going on.

Know your rights

Read the lease and any agreement you may have signed. As a renter, you will have plenty of rights, but also be aware of rights that the landlord has.

Example: Late fees may be charged if you do not pay your rent on time.

Example: Your landlord may charge you for maintenance repairs for damage you caused. This can be while you are still living in the apartment or even after you move out.

To prevent any unwanted fees, try to keep your rental in good condition and return it in a similar state as to when you first moved in. Things like holes in a wall, stains in a carpet and leaving junk can add up to a big bill when you move out.

Renewal Increases

You should expect your landlord to increase your rent every year by a small percentage (typically up to 6%). But, this does not mean that you have to settle for the amount they want. You can try to negotiate a lower rate before signing the new lease, but keep in mind that it is likely that the offer won’t change.

To Sum it Up

No apartment is perfect, but you can (and should!) make yours into a wonderful home! Organize the space how YOU like it and customize it to fit your needs. When things come up, remember that your landlord is human too, and maintaining a positive relationship will reap many benefits.

The First Trimester Survival Guide

Bsha’a tova! You are going to have a baby! It’s a very exciting time, and you should always feel happy, right?

There are plenty of joyous moments in pregnancy, and a lot to look forward to once you become a mother. However, in your first trimester, you might not be feeling the excitement.

With all your symptoms, questions and secrets, how are you supposed to make it through?

I am currently writing this article while in my first trimester, so here are some tips that have been helping me through:

Know that you are not alone

There are so many women in your community that you know that are going through this at the same time as you. While everyone has a different experience, it does not mean that it’s not challenging for you.

Keep yourself busy

You may just want to sit on the couch all day, and that is completely normal! If you can, try to focus on what you can accomplish instead of hyperfocusing on every ick that you feel.

Here are some ideas:

  • Call a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while
  • Read a book
  • Relax! Know that you are being productive even while sitting and relaxing!

Know your body and what you can handle

Your body works incredibly hard during pregnancy! Take care of yourself! Drink extra water and take breaks from your daily routine.

Avoid foods that trigger nausea

This may be easier said than done, but try to do what you can to limit any possible nausea. If you are struggling with this, your doctor will be able to recommend over the counter vitamins or prescribe medications to help. You don’t need to wait until your next appointment to bring it up! It’s okay to give your doctor a call to discuss what can be done to help you feel better.

Tell someone

The hardest part may just be keeping it a secret! Even if you are choosing to wait a while before sharing the news, consider telling someone who you are close to, who would be a good listening ear.

Educate yourself with accurate information

If you are concerned about a symptom or unsure if something is ok, don’t look it up on Google!

There are many reliable resources that are helpful and won’t scare you into thinking something is an emergency, when it is in fact not an issue at all.

When in doubt, you can always give your doctor’s office a call. Feel free to ask your doctor for a recommendation of a book or specific resource to help you with learning everything you need to know.

Smart Money Saving Tips for Everyday Life

Who doesn’t like to save money? Here are some tips to help you keep to your budget and save some $$. I am sure you have some great ideas in mind for what you would do with it 🙂

1. Buy in bulk at wholesale pricing

Stores such as Costco or Sam’s Club sell everyday items in larger quantities, often at a cheaper rate. Not all of their products are cheaper than the average supermarket, so keep an eye on the price per item/ounce. If there is an item you use often, don’t be afraid to buy it in larger quantities for a cheaper price.

2. Purchase “store brand” items

Not all knockoff brands and products are created equal. However, there are many store brands who sell great quality products. These products are frequently produced in the same factory and produce the same quality as the original brand, so the only difference between the name brand and the knockoff  is the price. There is no “one-size fits all” approach to this, but it’s worth the trial and error to find “off brand” products that work best for you.

*TIP: Keep an eye out for statements such as “compare to _____ brand.” This is usually an easy way of knowing if the quality is comparable to the name brand product.

Example: Target’s up & up™ brand tissues

3. Plan your meals in advance

Meal planning sounds like a lot of work, but in reality it only takes a few minutes! Check out my article on meal planning for a more in depth guide to help with planning your meals in advance (insert link).

Planning your meals in advance and shopping based on the ingredients you will need for them, will cut down on the number of trips you take to the grocery store and the amount you spend.

4. Create a shopping list and stick to it

This is easier said than done, but following a shopping list will help you save some cash and stick to your grocery budget.

5. Don’t shop all in one place

With your busy schedule, you might be tempted to do all your shopping in one store. Yes, doing so will cut down on the amount of time you spend shopping, but you will pay for the convenience. Grocery stores know this, which is why they typically price their toiletries and diapers at a much higher cost than your average Target or Walmart.

There are countless stores in every neighborhood, and knowing where to buy what will save you a lot of money in the long run.

6. Keep an eye out for sales

If you see a big sale on an item you use on a regular basis, don’t be afraid to stock up!

7. Get in the habit of saving

Commit to putting aside money into savings, no matter what. Small amounts add up! Every month and year will bring many changes to your lifestyle and budget, but it’s never too early to get in the habit of saving.

8. Avoid “flash deals”

There are lots of great chats and websites that focus on “flash” deals. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t join them, but try to think twice before purchasing under pressure from a flash deal. Sometimes it’s better not to know what deals you’re “missing out on.”

9. Reusable over disposable

Disposable dishes, tablecloths and cutlery are great for convenience. However, if you are living on a tight budget, you know that the cost of these items can quickly add up. There are pros and cons to both reusable and disposable, but the decision is up to you.

10. Turn your thermostat on a schedule

Set the temperature to reflect when you are home or out of the house. When you are not home in the winter you will want the thermostat set to a lower temperature. Alternatively, you will want to set it to a higher temperature when you are not home in the summer.

*TIP: If you are planning  to be away from home during winter days. don’t turn your heat off. It can result in frozen pipes (depending on the climate you live in). Instead, set the thermostat to a very low temperature so the heat will kick in when needed.

11. Eat out for lunch instead of dinner

Restaurants typically offer the same menu throughout the day. The perk of going out for lunch is the lower price of the lunch specials most places offer.

12. Make your own coffee

The savings from making your coffee at home instead of buying can really add up fast.

13. Use the 24-hour rule

Before making a non-essential purchase, wait a day before purchasing it. Most of the time you will find that the item is more of a “want” than a “need.” This habit will help prevent impulse purchases and make you more mindful with your spending.

14. Don’t be afraid to ask

Is your monthly phone bill very high? Call the provider and ask if there are any discounts they can give you. Very often the answer will be an easy yes!

15. Take advantage of student discounts

If you or your husband are in school, there are many discounts you can qualify for. All you will need is proof that you are a student- either a student ID or school email address. If you are unsure if a store offers student discounts, remember, it can’t hurt to ask!

TIP: Walmart sells fresh kosher pizza dough for $1.78 (at the time the article was written). I’ve also seen similar products at Trader Joe’s and at local bakeries.

Microwave: Create a s’mores sandwich and microwave for about 15 seconds

Oven: Preheat your oven to broil. Layer 1 graham cracker square, chocolate and a marshmallow on a lined cookie sheet. Place in the oven for about 1-2 minutes, but not longer so it doesn’t burn. Once out of the oven, add the second graham cracker square onto the s’more to make it complete.
